He played in a lot of ad hoc ensembles and bands with musicians like Billy Hart, Ben Sluys, Maak’s Spirit, Kris Defoort, Ben Monder, Uri Caine, John Zorn, Jozef Dumoulin, Trevor Dunn, Shahzad Ismaily, Marshall Allen (Sun Ra Orchestra), Barre Phillips, Misha Mengelberg, Jean-Yves Evrard, Rudy Trouvé, Chantal Acda, Eddy Loozen and many more.
Parallel to his activities as a jazz-musician Eric Thielemans has a big interest in the performing arts (theatre, dance), the visual arts and poetry and literature. Throughout the years he has worked as a composer and musician for multiple artists and companies in the dance and theater world among which Anna Konjetski, Pierre Droulers, Josse De Pauw, Arne Sierens, Jetse Batelaan (Ro Theater), Schweigman& (NL) and cie Berlin. Since 2002 Eric Thielemans has been focusing on the development of a body of solo works, challenging the borders of percussion.
His first acclaimed solo work “a Snare is a Bell” was released on vinyl in 2007 by the Antwerp based label Ultra Eczema (UE49). In 2009, another CD-R with solo works was released on E.T.’s own OORWERK label. In March 2012, the release of the double CD “Earr plays a Snare is a Bell” on Belgium’s' cult label Subrosa captured both his “a Snare is a Bell” cycle (including his former solo piece) and a new ensemble approach of the work titled “EARR plays a Snare is a Bell”. In April 2014, the solo album “SPRANG” was released by the Berlin based label MIASMAH. In 2016, the solo album “Aural Mist” was digitally released on the label Kesh and in 2018 he released his latest work “BATA BABA LOKA” (out on OORWERK).
Lately his interests have expanded to include the research and reflective space around his practise and work and bring them into a more formal place.
He is currently doing a 1-year artistic research (2018) into/on the “zero-degree” of places, called “The color in shadow” at both the Royal Academy of Antwerp and the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp.
He has been teaching as a guest lecturer at both the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp, where in 2016, together with visual artist and post doc researcher Nico Dockx he co-organised a masterclass for students of the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp and the Department of Sociology of the University of Antwerp.
In a search to integrate the reflective and the production of work in his practise, Eric Thielemans develops lecture performances (“Notes on Blindness”), staged live podcast programs (“Klankbad”) and “Talking about the Weather”, a conversational “making together” in which he focusses on the creation of oral history, shared meaning, the atmosphere of a specific situation and the how and when of emergence.
Eric Thielemans’s work includes sound installations, blogs, live radio, solo releases, multidisciplinary performance work, a music-ensemble (EARR) and live-performances.
Recently, Eric Thielemans has composed for and collaborated with: Laure Delamotte-Legrand 'Dolldrums', cie Berlin 'Jeruzalem' and 'Remember the Dragons', Schweigman& 'ERF', Chantal Acda 'The Sparkle in our Flaws' and 'Bounce Back', Nico Dockx 'Vingertop of hand', and Arocha-Schraenen 'work in progress'.
